Hormel Foods agreed on September 29 to buy Brakebush Brothers for a base price of $1.055 billion in cash, and announced the deal the next morning. Brakebush, based in Westfield, Wisconsin, is a non-integrated chicken processor with about $1.2 billion in trailing sales, five plants, and a foodservice customer base. The deal is expected to close in Hormel's fiscal first quarter of 2027, to be reported in Foodservice, and to add to adjusted earnings only in fiscal 2028. At about 0.9 times sales, the price buys foodservice reach Tyson and Pilgrim's already hold inside integrated systems.
BiomEdit Receives a USDA Conditional License for Its Lead Poultry Product
BiomEdit, an Indianapolis startup founded in 2022 and backed by Anterra Capital, said USDA granted a conditional license for its lead poultry product on September 29. The company started commercial evaluations with three major U.S. producers, covering more than 35 million broilers, and opened a Series C for launch and a full license. It says a study reviewed by USDA cut necrotic-enteritis mortality from 13.1 percent to 6.6 percent. Zoetis and Elanco already sell poultry health products into the same barns, so the license pays only if those evaluations become orders.
Cargill Puts More Than $130 Million into Poultry in Thailand and the Philippines
Cargill said on September 28 it will invest more than $130 million over two years in poultry operations in Thailand and the Philippines. The plan includes a cooked-chicken line in Saraburi, Thailand, due in 2028, and a Philippine feed mill of 190,000 metric tons a year, due in late 2027. Cargill says the Thai expansion would lift cooked volume to about 160,000 metric tons, product it already exports to Japan, Europe, and North America. Those export tons go to Japan, Europe, and North America, markets where Tyson and Pilgrim's already sell U.S. chicken.
CJ CheilJedang and ADM Agree to Pool Feed Amino-Acid Plants
CJ CheilJedang and ADM agreed on October 2 to a joint venture CJ will majority-own, combining plants in Iowa, Brazil, and Decatur, Illinois. The venture would hold exclusive Americas rights to make and sell feed-grade amino acids, and neither company disclosed a price. ADM said continued U.S. lysine production is at risk, and pointed to recent Commerce action on Chinese lysine imports. Evonik and Ajinomoto already sell into U.S. hog and poultry rations, and this venture pools plants that already run rather than breaking ground on a new one.
Cal-Maine Loses $58.6 Million as Conventional Egg Prices Fall 59 Percent
Cal-Maine Foods reported a fiscal first-quarter net loss of $58.6 million, or $1.26 a share, as net sales fell 41.5% to $539.6 million. Conventional egg prices dropped 59.3% and that segment lost $71.0 million, while specialty eggs and prepared foods reached 54.1% of sales, up from 37.1%. Under its variable dividend policy the company will not pay a dividend until it earns back a $94.5 million cumulative loss. Producers without that specialty mix take the same price drop with less to offset it, which is how earlier troughs shifted volume toward Cal-Maine.
ArkeaBio Raises $15 Million and Cuts Staff Ahead of a 2027 Filing
ArkeaBio, a Boston startup working on a methane vaccine for cattle, raised $15 million on September 30 in a Series A2 led by AgriZeroNZ, with Breakthrough Energy participating. Chief executive Frank Wooten told AgFunder the firm cut about a third of its staff, will file in New Zealand in 2027, and hopes for 2028 revenue. He put the first product's methane reduction at 10% to 15%, against the 30% DSM cites for Bovaer in dairy cows. A vaccine timed to existing herd-health visits could reach grazing cattle that never see a feed bunk, which daily additives do not.
