Rotem Stays a Distinct Brand Inside Munters' Speria Platform
Drovers reported that Jake and Ruby Alford, founders of TARC, and the Steiger Family Office acquired GEM, the Genetic and Economic Management platform Larry Benyshek and John Hough built in 2003 for herd records, genetics, and sale-day clerking. GEM's site names the Alfords as owner-operators and says more than 3,000 ranchers use the system, with more than 1 million head sold and $2.7 billion processed; the purchase price was not disclosed. Horizontal herd apps that never owned that sale-day stack now face an installed competitor under cattle operators rather than a quiet founder retirement.
ICE Lists Live Cattle and Hog Futures for December 7 Against CME
ICE Futures U.S. said on October 13 it will list live cattle, feeder cattle, and lean hog futures for trade date December 7, pending regulatory review. Physically delivered live cattle (MOO) starts with the June 2027 month at 40,000 pounds; financially settled lean hogs (SOW) and feeder cattle (COW) launch alongside. CME Group has run the benchmark livestock complex since the 1960s and said it had no comment; ICE's 2012 grain challenge did not dislodge CME. Feedlots and integrators get a second clearing venue only if liquidity actually moves.
Smithfield Signs $600 Million Delayed-Draw Term Loan to Refinance 2027 Notes
Smithfield Foods, the U.S. pork processor, entered a senior unsecured delayed-draw term loan on October 14 for up to $600 million, with Bank of America as administrative agent, and filed the 8-K on October 16. The facility can be drawn once through December 23, 2026, and matures three years after funding. Proceeds are aimed at redeeming the 4.250% senior notes due 2027 on or after November 1 at par plus accrued interest. Covenants cap debt-to-capitalization at 50% and require interest coverage of at least 3.50x. The refinancing clears that 2027 maturity without a disclosed change to the pork operating plan.
FDA Clears Kemin's KemTRACE Chromium for Broiler Breeders and Layers
A Federal Register final rule dated October 14 extends chromium propionate as a feed additive for broiler breeder chickens and laying hens, completing Kemin's path after prior clearances in swine, cattle, horses, and growing turkeys. Feedstuffs and Kemin's release frame KemTRACE as the only FDA-reviewed chromium propionate source on that label set. Broiler-breeder trials cited in trade coverage ran 84 days at peak production without fertility or hatchability penalties. Integrators buying stress-mitigation additives now have a cleared chromium option across layer and breeder flocks, not only grow-out birds.
Iowa State Opens Sperm Intelligence for Single-Cell Semen Evaluation
Iowa State University's Karl Kerns lab described Sperm Intelligence on October 15 as an image-based flow cytometry and machine-learning platform that scores individual boar and bull sperm on shape, DNA integrity, membrane and acrosome health, and oxidative stress. The pitch is that motility and morphology averages miss fertile subpopulations; Maschhoffs data from 2020 is cited showing about one in four boars below 80% conception despite normal conventional checks. The platform is positioned to complement stud labs, with confidential stud data by design, not as a finished retail SaaS launch. Genetics programs that already pay for semen evaluation have a new vendor conversation if the fertile-subpopulation score predicts barn results.
Rotem Stays a Distinct Brand Inside Munters' Speria Platform
Munters FoodTech said on October 15 that Rotem, the climate-control line it has owned since 2011, now operates as a distinct product brand inside Speria, the group's operational-intelligence platform for poultry, swine, and greenhouse controllers. Managing director Eran Levy said products such as Trio, Greenfield, and AC2000 do not change for customers; Speria's president framed the move as connecting installed hardware to a broader software and data offer. Hotraco's installed base is often cited in the same stack narrative. Point-solution barn-controller vendors without a data layer are the ones explaining why a standalone thermostat still wins the bid.
